Natural Dog Food

When we first started looking at feeding our dogs the Natural Way we were

stumped over exactly what we would be able to feed them. Luckily we came across the wonderful Sharda Baker’s “The Complete Guide to Your Dog’s Nutrition”

It’s a well-researched guide to what to feed your dog. Amongst other things it also looks at what’s in the proprietory dog foods and helps you decide exactly what is, and isn’t, going to be good for your pet.

The two recipes below are from Sharda. If you are interested in her book, please click the link at the bottom of the page.

Also remember when measuring out dog food that a normal portion for a German Shepherd will be somewhat larger than that for a Yorkshire Terrier!

500 gms (1lb 2 oz) beef, lamb, veal, ham, turkey or chicken (You can combine)

1 small finely chopped potato

1/2 cup sliced stringless green beans

1 finely chopped carrot

1 stick celery (finely chopped)

1 tablespoon beef or chicken bouillion

Place all your ingredients into a large cassorole dish. Cover with water and stir well to mix. Put lid on casserole. Microwave on high for 10 minutes and then on medium for 10 minutes. These times may need adjusting depending on the power of your microwave. Cool well before feeding.

2 eggs – beaten

1 cup cooked rice

1 cup cooked veggies

1 tbsp chopped parsley (optional)

1 cup grated cheese

1 tbsp Brewer’s yeast

The veggies can be almost anything – potatoes, zucchini, peas, beans, carrots, etc but not onion, garlic or leek – and should be grated or mashed. Preheat oven to 350F (180C, Gas Mark 4). Mix all ingredients together well. Drop by teaspoons onto a greased baking sheet. Bake for about 12 minutes until set and lightly browned. Cool and store in airtight container in the refrigerator.
